Olive Jane Lamb Chapter of Questers
The Olive Jane Lamb Chapter of Questers met in the home of Linda Kirchhoff on March 14, 2013 with 8 members present. President Linda Kirchhoff called the meeting to order and asked that the minutes from the last meeting be approved. After discussion of other topics, the business meeting adjourned at 7:20.
Linda gave a very informative program about her hometown of Dubuque, IA. She shared many pieces of artwork by Carl Johnson who was from Chicago and had a studio in Galena, IL. She also had many postcards, books, and coloring books in her collection. Linda began by telling us that the Fox Indians were the first inhabitants of the Dubuque area. Later, Marquette and Joliet explored the area, and eventually Julien Dubuque settled in the area and traded. He obtained rights from the Indians to mine lead in the area and founded the city.
Linda shared pictures of a bridge over the Catfish, Dog Trot cabin, the old jail, an octagonal house, the Shot Tower, Ryan House and Ham house. She also had pictures of Washington Park and the Robinson Lacey house, which was in Jackson Park. Union Park (1891) was started by a trolley company. The YMCA later purchased it, and Linda’s dad worked there.
The Fenlon Elevator, also known as the 4th St. Elevator, was the steepest and shortest elevator. Linda had several pictures of the elevator, including one by P. Buckley Moss.
Other pictures included the first courthouse, which was located in Washington Park. St. Luke’s Methodist Church (1896) was built in Romanesque architecture style and had 100 Tiffany windows. The Stout home was an example of eclectic style. Other pictures of homes included those of Linda’s relatives.
The meeting concluded with conversation and delicious desert served by the hostess.
Sherman Sunbeam 4H Club
The Sherman Sunbeam 4H Club met on Saturday March 9,2013 at the United Presbyterian Church.
Thirteen members were present. Christian Laube led the Pledge of Allegiance, Christian then called the meeting to order.
Roll call was your favorite color. The secretary's report was read by Katie Hughes. The Treasurer's report was
given by Amanda :aube.
On the agenda was making plans for the club's High Ropes trip in May to the 4H Center in Madrid.
We also discussed plans for Relay for life and our fundraiser with Domino's Pizza on May 20th.
Sighn up sheets for Little Hands on the Farm at the State Fair were also handed out. Those
participating in the Live Healthy Kids program turned in there reports. After adjourning the
meetin Amanda led the 4H pledge. Refreshments for the morning were provideed by Christian and
Amanda Laube.
