Newton Police Department

• A 12-year-old Newton boy was charged with simple assault after officers were called to Woodrow Wilson Elementary School at 12:12 p.m. Wednesday. The 12-year-old allegedly hit a 34-year-old man in the face and attempted to kick him several times. The case was referred to juvenile courts.

• Wes Anderson, 48, of Newton was charged with operating while intoxicated after police stopped his vehicle for a broken brake light at 8:45 p.m. Friday in the 1900 block of First Avenue East. His blood alcohol content at the time was .112 percent. He was released to appear.

• Richard L. Cooper, 41, of Des Moines was charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia after police stopped his vehicle for a broken license plate light in the 800 block of East Eighth Street North at 2:12 a.m. Sunday. Officers were given permission to search his vehicle and found a baggie containing methamphetamine. He then told officers he had a syringe in the vehicle, which officers later found. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Jordan L. Foreman, 25, of Newton was charged with fifth degree theft at the Newton Police Department Saturday for allegedly stealing a pair of shoes at the Shoe Department at 5:08 p.m. Thursday. Employees told police a man allegedly walked out of the store with a new pair of shoes without paying for it. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Lance J. Haugen, 29, of Collins was cited for operating a motor vehicle while license suspended after police stopped his vehicle in the 1900 block of West Fourth Street North at 1:21 a.m. Saturday. He was released to appear.

• Kristy L. Johnson, 34, of Newton was cited for leaving the scene of an accident and following too close following an investigation of an two-vehicle accident reported at 11:52 a.m. Sunday in the 1200 block of First Avenue East. The other driver James D. Rouse, 55, of Monroe told police a vehicle struck the rear of his vehicle and left the scene. Rouse was able to give police a description of the alleged vehicle which was found to be owned by Johnson. Police arrived at 1804 N. Second Ave. E. and cited her. Damage to both vehicles was estimated at $1,500.

• Cody A. Jones, 20, of Newton was cited for operating a motor vehicle while license suspended after police stopped his vehicle in the 100 block of East Third Street South at 1:03 a.m. Saturday. Police also discovered he was driving without insurance and was cited additionally for it. He was released to appear.

• Jared M. King, 23, was cited for driving without a seatbelt and driving while license suspended after officer stopped him for a traffic violation in the 500 block of First Avenue West at 11:20 p.m. Thursday. He was release to appear.

• Robert C. McFall III, 27, of Newton received five citations for driving while license suspended after police stopped his vehicle for a traffic stop at 12:20 a.m. Saturday in the 400 block of First Avenue East for operating without headlights and tail lights. Upon investigation, police discovered his license was suspended five times and discovered the vehicle was not registered to him but to Ashley A. Henderson, 29, of Newton. Police then questioned her if she knew about his suspended license. Henderson admitted she did, and police cited her for allowing an unauthorized person to drive. McFall was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Cody J. Purvis, 25, of Runnells, was charged with operating while intoxicated after police stopped him for speeding at 2:01 a.m. Saturday in the 1100 block of East Fifth Street South. During the traffic stop, officers noticed he had bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol. He refused sobriety tests, and was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Dominique Stephenson, 26, of Des Moines was cited for driving while license suspended, and driving with expired license plates after police stopped her vehicle at the Love’s Truck Stop at 1:34 a.m. Sunday. She was released to appear.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. It is the policy of the Newton Daily News to release the names of individuals charged with a crime who are 16 and older.
