Morris O. “Bud” Kahn, Jr
Morris O. “Bud” Kahn, Jr., 88, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born in Des Moines on March 28, 1924 to Gretchen and Morris Kahn, Sr. He is baby brother to sisters, Rose Lorig (Marx) and Lenore Kahn Cohen (Sam). Bud was married 24 years to Beverly Sanders Kahn and 40 years to Roberta Saigh Ibson Kahn. Bud was dad to Cynthia Kahn Thorson (Craig), Gary Kahn (Janie), Laurie Kahn, Cecelia Ibson (Wendell Eck) and Matthew Ibson Kahn (Melinda); and grandpa to nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Upon graduation from Roosevelt High School, Bud served in the Army Air Corps and the US Air Force where he flew both B17’s and C47’s during WWII and the Korean War. He retired as a Captain. Recently he served as a docent at the Commemorative Air Force Museum in Mesa, AZ. He enjoyed flying as a hobby and for business and was an active member of QB (Quiet Birdman).
Bud was a successful businessman starting his career by owning Dodge Field airport from 1946-1950 and then taking over Sanders Motors in Newton, IA from l953 to l974. He was Chairman of the Board of the Manley State Bank from 1980 to 1984 and served on the board of the Newton National Bank from 1969 to 2011.
Always someone to give advice and time, Bud served on numerous community and industry boards including President of the Rotary Club and Jaycees in Newton, IA. He also served as President of the Iowa Automobile Dealers Association in 1963. Over his lifetime he received numerous awards for his volunteer service.
Bud was an avid bicycle rider, boater and pilot. He often credited his long life to his bike riding and until a few years ago planned many bike rides with friends. He enjoyed solving problems and many came to him for his advice and wisdom. He was much loved for his humor.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly and son, Matthew. The family wishes to thank the staff at Deerfield Health Center, Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Iowa Health Hospice for their loving care. Bud wished that there be no funeral, just good memories and smiles. There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date.
