Public hearing on sewage during supervisors meeting

When the Jasper County Board of Supervisors meets Tuesday for its weekly meeting, the first thing on its agenda will be the public hearing and second reading of ordinance 61 which focuses on on-site wastewater treatment and disposal.

Ordinance #61 would repeal ordinances 52, 53, 54, 55, 55a and 56. By repealing the previous ordinances, 61 would give comprehensive regulations for the use, design, installation, maintenance and replacement of all on-site wastewater treatment and disposal systems in all incorporated and unincorporated areas of Jasper County. It would also provide the administration and enforcement of the new regulations.

Jasper County Sanitation Director Kevin Luetters will be available at the public hearing to answer questions the public may have.  The board will also hold a public hearing to set a date for construction permit applications for a confinement feeding operation. The tentative date is April 4.

The board also will receive an update from Jasper County Treasurer Doug Bishop on Jasper County’s depositories. There are currently 11 financial institutions that currently hold deposits and Hedrick Bank of Kellogg has requested to be the 12th. In a letter to the board, Bishop said:

“Hedrick Bank in Kellogg has asked to be named a depository,” Bishop wrote. “I would ask that this be considered and approved at your next meeting.”

The supervisors also will set up a public hearing for the fiscal year 2012-2013 budget amendment. The recommended date is April 4.

The board will also vote to approve the new three-year agreement Sheriff John Halferty struck with Keefe Commissary Network.  Under the agreement, Keefe would provide computer equipment to the correctional facility and provide a variety of services that inmates can purchase. Items include pre-stamped envelopes, stamps, phone cards and various other items. Prices will be determined by both parties and the deal will automatically renew each of the three years, unless one side or the other gives a 90-day notice to terminate.

Rita Reinheimer of the Jasper County Genealogical Society will discuss her group’s plans for its library, located at 113 W. Second St. S. in Newton. According to the genealogical society’s site:

“The objectives of the society are to:

1. Create and foster an interest in genealogy.

2. Preserve genealogical and historical data, particularly of our ancestors and the early settlers of Jasper County.

3. Aid individuals in compiling family genealogies.

4. Establish and maintain, through contributions of members, interested individuals, and the Society, a genealogical reference section, consisting of county histories, periodicals, surname file and family genealogies.”
