Robert L. Vander Schel, 78, of Rock Creek Lake near Kellogg, Iowa, died on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at the Mayflower Health Care Center in Grinnell.

No services are planned. Memorials may be directed to the Poweshiek Animal Shelter (PALS) and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.

Robert was born on September 16, 1934, in Pella, Iowa to Jerry and Henrietta Tuinstra Vander Schel. He was raised in Pella and graduated from Pella High School with the Class of 1952. From 1953 to 1957, he served with the U.S. Air Force.

He lived in the Newton area most of his life and worked in the printing department at the Newton Daily News. Following his retirement he lived at Rock Creek Lake.

Survivors include his children, Heidi Vander Schel of Newton and Vince Vander Schel of Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn; his parents; and one brother, Melvin Vander Schel.
