Newton Police Department
• Andrew W. Baldwin, 16, of Newton was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian at the intersection of First Avenue and First Street near PJ’s Deli at 8:03 a.m. Wednesday. Baldwin was driving eastbound on First Avenue when he turned onto First Street and hit Phillip D. Schryver, 35, of Newton, who was walking west through the intersection crosswalk. Baldwin said the glare of the sun prevented him from seeing Schryver, who was transported to Skiff Medical Center.
• Cole S. Doerring, 16, of Newton was cited for failure to maintain control after he struck a parked vehicle at 7:53 a.m. Wednesday in the 700 block of South Fifth Avenue West. Doerring was traveling eastbound on Fifth Avenue. Doerring said sunlight prevented him from seeing the vehicle, owned by Danial Vasquez of Newton. Both vehicles sustained an estimated $1,500 worth of damage.
• Kalob A. Garcia, 19, of Newton was cited for driving without registration after police stopped his vehicle for driving with an expired tag at 11:14 p.m. Tuesday in the 600 block of First Avenue East. As police searched the vehicle, they discovered his passenger, Michael A. Criqui, 20, of Newton had Alprazolam pills, marijuana and a pipe near him. He was charged with possession of a Schedule IV substance, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released to appear.
• Ian D. McCandless, 19, of Newton was arrested at 1730 W. Fourth St. N at 1:26 a.m. Thursday for an outstanding warrant issued by Colfax for failure to appear on an operating a motor vehicle while license suspended charge. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
• Tammy L. Morton, 55, of Prairie City was charged with public intoxication at 4:04 a.m. Friday after police were called to the 1500 block of North Second Avenue East on a report of an individual attempting to get into a house. She was transported to Skiff Medical Center and admitted she used methamphetamine previously. After her release from the hospital, she was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
• Steven L. Welcher, 25, of Newton was cited for failure to maintain control after he struck a parked vehicle at 7:53 a.m. Wednesday in the 300 block of South Fifth Avenue West. Welcher said the glare of the sun hindered his vision and resulted in him striking the vehicle, which was owned by Gregory G. Rumberg of Newton. Damage to Welcher’s vehicle was estimated at $1,500, and Rumberg’s vehicle damage was estimated at $2,000. Rumberg also received a ticket for parking in a no parking zone.
Jasper County Sheriff’s Office
• Jesse H. Lundin, 26, of Newton was arrested at 7:02 p.m. Wednesday on a outstanding warrant for failure to appear for pretrial for a serious assault charge issued on Feb. 2 after police stop him for a traffic violation in the 8500 block of Highway F48 West. During the traffic stop, police discovered he had an outstanding warrant and took him Jasper County Jail.
• Luke R. Leclere, 27 of Newton turned himself into police at 6:02 p.m. Monday. He had a warrant out for his arrest on a probation violation. He was taken to the jasper County Jail.
A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. It is the policy of the Newton Daily News to release the names of individuals charged with a crime who are 16 and older.
