Wanda Lee (Ponder) Wehner

Wanda Lee (Ponder) Wehner, 83, passed away on March 1, 2013.

Wanda was born on Oct. 25, 1929, in Jasper County, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Bernice Meredith Ponder. She was a 1948 graduate of Newton Senior High School. She obtained a bachelor of arts degree at Iowa Teachers College in 1952 and a master’s degree in chemistry in 1966. In 1968, Wanda began teaching in the chemistry department at State College of Iowa (UNI), and she retired in 1992. Wanda was active in many Cedar Valley organizations, she was 50-year member of First United Methodist Church and was very active with United Methodist Women. Wanda was one of the statewide leaders for the Thanksgiving In Gathering.

Wanda was a passionate and award-winning quilter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Wehner, who died on Feb. 19, 2013; her parents; and her older sister, Lois Lisk. She is survived by her brothers, J. Glen (Marian) Ponder, William (Barbara) Ponder and Leo (Terri) Ponder; her sisters, Ruth (John) Schuck and Bonnie Ellis; her daughters, Sherilyn (Thomas) DeKarske, Susan Wehner (Guenter Munderloh) and Linda (John) Van Vlack; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service was held March 5, 2013, in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
