William Penn reaches NAIA Division II semis
William Penn University, coached by Newton native John Henry, advanced to the NAIA Division II men’s basketball semifinals thanks to some last-second heroics by senior James Devlin on Saturday.
Devlin grabbed an offensive rebound and threw up a shot as time expired to give the Statesmen a wild 67-66 victory over Midland (Neb.) to send them to the NAIA semifinals for the first time in school history.
The Statesmen, who have not lost since Dec. 7, were led in scoring by Keith Steffeck, who finished with 19 points. He was joined in double figures by Taylor Stoutner with 18, as well as Brandon Beasley, who scored 12 and pulled down a monstrous 23 rebounds. Devlin’s game-winner was only his second made field goal of the game, as he finished with six points.
