Velma ‘Lucene’ Bogue

Velma “Lucene” Bogue, 70, formerly of Kellogg, Iowa, passed away on Sunday March 3, 2013, surrounded by her family and friends at Bethany Good Samaritan in Brainerd, Minn.

Lucene was born Dec. 28, 1942 in Moulton, Iowa, to Samuel and Velma Morrow Leach. Lucene was the youngest of three children. She was united in marriage to Jerry Bogue on Dec. 17, 1960. The couple lived in Kellogg, Iowa, where they raised their two children. Following a brain aneurism at the age of 47, Lucene spent 20 years at Friendship Manor Care Centre in Grinnell, Iowa, prior to moving to Bethany Good Samaritan in Minnesota where she spent the last 18 months of her life playing bingo, Yahtzee, bowling, attending family celebrations and outings, boating, going to the casino, listening to Elvis and attending church services. She was recently nominated and crowned Queen Valentine at Bethany.

Left to cherish her memory are her two children, Tina (Michael) Jay of Brainerd, Minn., and Angie (Todd) VanWyk of Lynnville, Iowa; her grandchildren, Jason (Marie), Cory (Kari Albright), Shaylea (Ryan Obeidzinski), Sarah (Josh Oehrlein) Amanda, Tyler, Ali, Caitlyn Jay and Kourtney VanWyk (Justin Morris) of Grinnell, Iowa; her seven great-grandchildren, Trenton, Jenna, Jaden, Jordan, Tori, Ava and Macy; and her favorite “furbaby,” Boomer.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Velma Morrow Leach, and her sister, Mary Ellen Blythe.

A memorial service celebrating Lucene’s life will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Kellogg Christian Church, 321 Bolton Street, Kellogg, Iowa, with Pastor Walt Claussen officiating. Friends are welcome to a reception that will be at The Park Cabin, otherwise known as “The Monkey House” Holmdahl Park, 120 Bolton St. in Kellogg, Iowa, following the service.

A private family burial will be at The Silent City Cemetery in Kellogg, Iowa.
