Newton Area Wrestling Club competes at state

Eleven members of the Newton Area Wrestling Club battled at the Iowa AAU state wrestling tournament at Wells Fargo Arena over the weekend, and most members walked away with at least one victory.

Woodrow Wilson Elementary School sixth-grader Josh Miller had the highest finish of the 11 area competitors, finishing third place in the B110 weight class. Miller finished off a strong year at state that included a 44-5 record.

Gaven Slycord (A95), Reece Caves (B95), Hunter Linne (B130), Rocky Dhabolt (B150) and Tristin Langmaid (C125) each earned victories at the tournament. Slycord earned a 6-0 decision, Caves snuck out a 1-0 decision, Linne won by an 8-2 decision and Dhabolt earned a 7-1 decision first first-round victories, while Langmaid battled back from a pin in the first round with a 9-0 decision in the second.
