Supervisors to vote to change septic system policies

The Jasper County Board of Supervisors will hear from Jasper County Sanitation Director Kevin Luetters about setting a public hearing date for additions, deletions and consolidations of ordinances regarding the county’s septic system policies at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The recommended dates are March 12, March 19 and March 26.

One of the major proposed changes is the introduction of the distribution box permit. If approved, when a box is in need of repair, a $50 permit would be required.

Another proposed change will be with regard to installation regulations. Currently, homeowners can install their own septic system. Luetters is suggesting to remove that rule, and add a “200-foot rule clarification.” The suggested clarification would force homeowners whose property are within 200 feet of a rural sewer to be hooked up to it if the homeowner needed a septic tank, or lateral field installed or replaced.

He is also recommending that a solid 4-inch schedule 40 pipe be used on the installation of septic tanks.

The board will also be voting to transfer $6,656.65, generated by the county’s camping ground fee, from the General Fund to the Conservation Budget.

The reasoning for the transfer is because in an earlier ruling, the board voted that money generated by the camping ground fee would be put into the General Fund, and it can be transferred if requested.

The board also will vote on the approval of the Jasper County treasurer’s semiannual report.

The report totals are listed as the following: beginning fund balance (July 1), $15,844,885.29; total revenues collected $41,177,815.38; total amount to be accounted for, $57,062,700.67; ending fund balance (Dec. 31), $16,287,929.78; outstanding checks and warrants $195,022.63 and outstanding stamps warrants was listed as zero.

Following the meeting, a public hearing will commence at 1 p.m. regarding the Secondary Road Department’s five-year plan.

Another item on the agenda included approval of a copier purchase of communication services/veteran’s affairs.
