Newton woman wins $40,000 prize

DES MOINES — A Newton woman won a $40,000 prize in Saturday’s Powerball drawing.

Karan Scovill-Hammer claimed her prize Feb. 5 at the Iowa Lottery’s headquarters in Des Moines. She purchased her winning ticket at Casey’s, 3104 First Ave. E. in Newton.

The winning numbers in the $183.1 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Feb. 2 were 11-16-33-40-41 and Powerball 34. Scovill-Hammer won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. Since she added the Power Play to her ticket, Scovill-Hammer multiplied her win to $40,000.

There was no jackpot winner for the Feb. 2 drawing. Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at www.ialottery.com or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633.

Since the lottery’s start in 1985, its players have won more than $3 billion in prizes while the lottery has raised more than $1.4 billion for the state programs that benefit all Iowans.

Lottery proceeds in Iowa have three main purposes: support for veterans, help for a variety of projects through the state General Fund, and backing for the Vision Iowa program, which was implemented to create tourism destinations and community attractions in the state and build and repair schools.
