Area Roundup: PCM wrestling picks up two wins Tuesday night
The Prairie City-Monroe wrestling team grabbed two nonconference victories Tuesday night, topping Woodward-Granger and Martensdale-St. Marys in a triangular in Monroe.
Against Woodward-Granger, the Mustangs had to rally after an early 24-12 deficit, in which Trent Malone scored a pin at 285 pounds for PCM’s first contested victory. After Alek Breckenridge received a forfeit at 126, Tristan Clark scored a 10-0 major decision at 132 to get the Mustangs back to within striking distance. Jade Coleman (152) then stuck his opponent and allowed PCM to cruise on forfeits to earn a 40-33 victory.
The second meet of the night was somewhat irregular as the Mustangs topped Martensdale-St. Marys 66-12, with nearly all of the points coming from forfeits. PCM earned the only two contested victories of the night when Koder pinned Nash Wiegert in 1 minute, 35 seconds and Cummings pinned Lane Gehringer in 1:14.
PCM will join CMB and Colfax-Mingo in the Heart of Iowa Conference meet at Saydel Saturday morning.

sweeps South Hamilton
Both Prairie City-Monroe basketball teams continued their win streaks Tuesday night with victories over South Hamilton in Jewell.
The Mustang boys (13-1, 10-1 Heart of Iowa Conference) doubled up the Hawks by a final score of 61-3, led by 19 points from senior Michael Neff. PCM held the lead after each quarter and held South Hamilton to single-digits in two quarters.
Also finding the stat sheet for PCM were freshman Logan Gilman with eight points, juniors Zach Uhlenhopp and Dillon Bruxvoort with seven, seniors Nate Vande Wall and Hunter Van Veen and junior Ryan Jennings with five, senior Alex DeWitte with four and senior Ethan Kain with one. Bruxvoort also led the team with six rebounds.
The Mustang girls extended their win streak to three games with a 64-50 victory over the Hawks in the first game of the doubleheader. PCM is now 8-6 overall and 7-5 in the conference, which places them within striking distance of third place.
Both Mustang squads will host Roland-Story Friday night in Monroe.
Lynnville-Sully basketball teams pound English Valleys
Both Lynnville-Sully basketball teams had strong home outings against English Valleys Tuesday night, as the Hawk girls won 47-26 and the boys cruised to a 69-28 victory.
For the girls (10-5, 9-5 South Iowa Cedar League), junior Rachel Van Wyk led the way with a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double, while sophomore Shelby Davis joined her in double figures with 12 points. As a team, L-S held the Bears to single-digits in every quarter but the fourth,
“The girls played very well tonight on both ends of the floor,” Hawks coach Jerry Hulsing said. “We came out, set the tempo on defense earlier and never let EV get into a rhythm.
Rounding out the Hawks’ scoring were junior Jade Van Rees with nine points, sophomore Lysandra James with six and freshman Kasiah Ehresman with three.
Things were even more lopsided on the boys side as the Hawks (11-2, 11-1) were led by senior Nathan Russell with 16 points and freshman Connor Cullen with 10. English Valleys was held to just nine points at halftime.
“I thought the guys did a great job of sharing the basketball,” L-S coach Nick Harthoorn said. “It was fun to see all the guys make some nice plays tonight.”
The Hawks indeed shared the ball, as 11 different players recorded at least two points. Junior TJ Cunningham had nine, senior Cale Van Wyk had eight, juniors Darin Hofer and Brandon Dunsbergen each had seven, senior Ryan Jansen had four and sophomore Ben Trettin, senior Brady Van Wyk, junior Jacob Walker and freshman Kyle Van Dyke each added two.
