Carroll A White

Carroll A White, 85 of Rhodes, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown, Iowa, surrounded by his loving family.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown, Iowa, with a Masonic service to follow at 7 p.m. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at Rhodes United Methodist Church in Rhodes, Iowa. Military Honors will be performed by the Rhodes American Legion Post #456. Memorials may be directed towards the Iowa River Hospice Home or to the family. Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Carroll and his family.

Carroll was born on April 11, 1927, at home in Rhodes to James Nathan White and Vesta Fern Good. His youth was spent on the family farm outside of Rhodes. He attended school in Melbourne, graduating in 1944. He enlisted in the United States Army in August of 1945 where he was stationed in Germany with the 333rd Engineer Special Service Regiment. Most of his work there was on construction projects. Carroll worked on the railroad and bridge that crossed the Rhine River at Mainz. After the Army, Carroll devoted the rest of his life to the family farm.

In February of 1950, Carroll married his first wife Kathleen Hemphill, to which four children were born: Karen, Linda, James and Michael. After Kathleen’s passing, Carroll married Ivanelle Brannin on September 14, 1974, in Melbourne, Iowa, where they resided in Rhodes on the family farm.

Carroll was a member of the Rhodes Methodist Church, Melbourne Full Moon Masonic Lodge #561, Rhodes American Legion Post #456, Marshalltown #40 and #8, several Marshalltown Masonic Lodges including: Signet Chapter #38; King Solomon Council #20; and St Alderman #30. He was a member of the NRA Golden Eagles, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and Experimental Aircraft Association. He enjoyed shooting guns and flying small aircrafts.

Carroll is survived by his wife of 38 years: Ivanelle White. Children: Karen (Doug) Cross; Linda White; James (Paula) White; and Michael (Leann) White. Stepchildren: Karisa (Danny) Symonds and William (Rita) Sward.  Brother: Rex (Marilyn) White. Sisters: Garnita Seward and Goldia (Brad) Canutt; eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He will truly be missed by many.

Carroll is preceded in death by both his parents and his first wife, Kathleen.
