Early retirement provision to headline tonight’s Newton school board meeting

At the top of the agenda for tonight’s regular meeting of the Newton Community School District Board of Education will be the discussion regarding an amendment to the district’s early retirement policy as it pertains to part-time employees.

At the most recent meeting, the board heard from several part-time district staff interested in taking part in the early retirement program but found themselves just short of the hourly requirements the program demands. Tonight, the board will discuss the possible implementation of a policy to include part-time staff in the early retirement program as well.

In addition, the board will review and approve current applications for the early retirement program as well as discuss the results of the teacher District In Need of Assistance surveys.

In the superintendent’s report, NCSD Superintendent Steve McDermott will brief the board on the recent Iowa Speedway donation in support of the 1:1 iPad initiative, review the Comprehensive Emergency Plan and update the board on the driveway recently completed at the Berg Complex.

McDermott will further lead the discussion on the potential use of iPads for board members, the plan for making up the snow days incurred just before the holiday break, and the approval of the 2013-2014 academic calendar.

The board will meet at 6 p.m. tonight in the Emerson Hough Multi-Purpose Room.
