Charges pending for juveniles in high-speed chase

Charges are pending against two Newton juveniles accused of stealing a vehicle and initiating a high speed chase with Newton police before crashing the vehicle early Friday morning.

At 1:23 a.m. Friday, Newton police observed a southbound vehicle driving erratically and speeding in the 1100 block of East 12th Street North. Police attempted to the stop the vehicle, and it sped away eastbound at a high rate of speed on North 11th Avenue East, according to a release from the Newton Police Department.

As the vehicle approached the intersection of East 31st Street North, the driver attempted to turn north and lost control, entering the east ditch and rolling onto its top.

Two juveniles, ages 17 and 14, were found inside of the vehicle and were transported to Skiff Medical Center by a Newton ambulance. The vehicle was determined to be stolen from a Newton resident earlier the same evening.

Charges are pending in this case, and the investigation continues.
