Kelley reminds local residents of available heating assistance
DES MOINES — State Rep. Dan Kelley of Newton is reminding Iowans who need assistance with home heating costs this winter to apply for financial assistance from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.
“With cold weather now approaching many families are struggling to make ends meet and need some assistance to help pay for their energy costs,” Kelley said. “No Iowan should have to choose between food and prescription drugs or keeping their home warm. This is also a great opportunity for families to make energy efficiency improvements to their home and save money while conserving energy.”
In 2011, more than 102,000 families benefited from LIHEAP assistance. Eligibility is based on annual income and families of all sizes may apply. The average LIHEAP award is $450 and the payment is made directly to the utility company. Iowans who apply for LIHEAP assistance are also automatically eligible for weatherization assistance, including insulation, furnace repair/replacement and water heater replacement.
