Local athletes win tourney with travel team

Iowa Intesity, a seventh-grade travel basketball team coached by Chris Hansen, won the Dowling Catholic Christmas Basketball Tournament Dec. 15 and 16. The first-place team featured Newton’s Garrett Sturtz, Lynnville-Sully’s Jesse Van Wyk, East Marshall’s Tyler DeBondt and Grinnell’s Logan Abrahamson, Brevin Hansen, Zaine Leedom, Garrett Loftin and Ethan Mitchell. The tournament consisted of three games of pool play on Saturday, in which the Intensity finished 2-1 to qualify for tournament play on Sunday.  The Intensity then went 3-0 to take first place in the 12-team tournament by beating the Cedar Rapids Xtreme, Dallas-Center Grimes and the Iowa Wolves.
