(MCT) — Running back Greg Garmon is leaving the University of Iowa, he told The Gazette on Wednesday.
In a brief phone interview, Garmon said “it wasn’t clicking for him at Iowa” and that it wasn’t a good “fit.” He added that he loved the program and the coaches treated him well. As for where he was transferring, he said he was “looking everywhere.”
Garmon said he discussed it with Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz and Garmon was granted an unconditional release, which means he can transfer anywhere.
A spokesman from the Iowa athletics department said the school would have no comment.
Garmon rushed 38 times for 122 yards as a true freshman last fall. He also caught eight passes for 57 yards. Against Northern Iowa on Sept. 15, he suffered an elbow injury that looked awful when he came off the field. He missed the next game, but returned to the lineup the next week. He also didn’t play in Iowa’s loss against Purdue.
On June 1 in his hometown of Erie, Pa., Garmon was charged with simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors. He later plead guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia and was fined.
Garmon is the fourth running back to leave Iowa in 2012, following Mika’il McCall, Marcus Coker and De’Andre Johnson.
Junior Mark Weisman led the Hawkeyes in rushing last season with 815 yards. Junior Damon Bullock finished with 513. They’re likely the top two running backs going into spring practice. Sophomore Jordan Canzeri will return after redshirting in ‘12 while rehabbing a torn ACL.
Redshirt freshman Barkley Hill, who’ll face at least a one-game for an OWI arrest in November, also was out last season while rehabbing a torn ACL. Redshirt freshman walk-on Michael Malloy nearly had his redshirt taken off last season, but will begin competition this spring.
