Hawk girls rally, edge out Iowa Valley 45-42

After suffering its second loss of the season on Friday, the Lynnville-Sully girls basketball team narrowly avoided its third on Monday.

Trailing after each of the first three quarters, the Hawks (5-2, 4-2 South Iowa Cedar League) rallied in the fourth to earn a 45-42 victory over the Tigers in Marengo.

“We started out slow the first quarter, but the girls did a good job of fighting their way back into the game,” L-S coach Jerry Hulsing said. “We really did a good job on the defensive end forcing Iowa Valley into some contested shots and we rebounded the basketball well.”

Junior Cassie Cullen paced the Hawks and led all scorers with a 17 point, 10 rebound double-double. Sophomore Madison Rasmusson was next up with nine points, sophomore Lysandra James had eight, sophomore Shelby Davis had five, junior Rachel Van Wyk had four and junior Jade Van Rees rounded out the team with two.

The Tigers won most of the team statistical categories, but the Hawks did get the edge on rebounds, 39-30. The Hawks shot 29.2 percent from the field and 18.8 percent from 3-point range, but also went 14-for-23 (60.9 percent) from the free-throw line.
