Hawk boys’ hoops defeats Iowa Valley 60-37

It didn’t take long for the Lynnville-Sully boys basketball team to earn a victory Monday night.

The Hawks (4-1, 4-0 South Iowa Cedar League) led 23-4 after the first quarter and 44-19 at halftime before eventually winning the game by a 60-37 final margin.

“It was nice to see us come out and play well right from the opening tip,” Lynnville-Sully coach Nick Harthoorn said. “We really moved the ball well offensively. Defense was pretty solid early, but we need to do a better job rebounding.”

Four Hawks finished in double figures in scoring, led by senior Nathan Russell’s 15. Freshman Connor Cullen was next in line with 13, junior Darin Hofer had 11 and senior Brady Van Wyk finished with 10. Hofer also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

Rounding out the Hawks’ scorers were senior Cale Van Wyk (six points), junior Brandon Dunsbergen and freshman Kyle Van Dyke (two each) and sophomore Jake Brand (one). As a team, the Hawks shot 43.6 percent from the field and had just 12 turnovers to Iowa Valley’s 25.

The Hawks will head right back into the conference fray tonight when they travel to Montezuma.
