Newton wrestlers go 2-3 at Western Dubuque duals tournament
Epworth in western Dubuque County is a long, three-hour drive from Newton. But after going 2-for-3 against a competitive buzzsaw, the ride home probably felt just a little bit longer for the Newton wrestling team Saturday.
"We got rode pretty hard; we need to get better in the down position," coach Bill Reed said. "We'll work on that in practice this week. We were better on our feet, though, as good — if not a little better for some of the guys — than on Thursday night."
Dakota Dawson at 132 and Koby Hall at 106 each went 4-1 on the long day. Dawson picked up two wins by fall and a major decision. Hall picked up three wins by fall. Both Cardinals were defeated in matches with Dakota, Ill. wrestlers.
"Both of them had really good days, good matches," Reed said. "Jacob Williams (285) and Jeffrey Thongvanh (160) both went 3-2, so they had good days, too. All of their losses were to some solid kids. Everyone won at least one match."
Newton opened the round-robin format tournament with a 44-33 win over Maquoketa Valley of Delhi. The dual started at 132 with Dawson winning by fall at 1:13, and by the time half of the weight classes had been wrestled, Newton held a 26-9 lead, having won four of the five contested matches.
In the second half of the dual, the Cardinals picked up wins in contested matches by Williams and Hall. Both won by fall; Williams in 1:12 at 220 and Hall in 1:44 at 106.
The Wildcats picked up the bulk of their points with forfeits at 285 and 113, as well as wins by fall over Ray Schroeder at 195 and Bryce Tish at 126. Newton picked up a forfeit at 120 to seal the victory.
Newton followed that dual victory up with a 63-16 loss to North Scott of Eldridge. The Cardinals got wins by fall in that dual from Hall and Tish, while Dawson picked up a major decision.
They picked up their second win in their third dual against a JV all-star team comprised of wrestlers from an assortment of area schools. Nicoli Allspach (at 145), Williams, Hull, Dawson and Brett Northcott (at 138) each picked up wins in contested matches for Newton.
The Cardinals then squared off with host school Western Dubuque's varsity team, taking a stinging 72-6 loss to the Bobcats. Hall and Dawson each picked up 4-0 decisions in their respective matches to complete Newton's scoring in the dual.
Newton closed out the tournament with a 57-18 loss to Illinois powerhouse Dakota. Thongvanh, Schroeder and Williams picked up wins in contested matches for the Cardinals in the dual. Williams won by fall in 28 seconds.
"Dakota and North Scott, those were some loaded teams," Reed said. "The North Scott kid [Dawson] beat was a rated kid. And the 132, 138 and 145-pound guys for Dakota, I think they pinned everyone they wrestled. [Dawson] wants to go back through the video to figure out what that kid did to him so he can use it on other kids."
Newton's coach said he was looking forward to returning to conference action with Thursday's dual against Norwalk, followed by Saturday's tournament in Fort Dodge.
"That Fort Dodge meet just got expanded to 12 teams," he said. "So that should be a good tournament with some tough competition."
