Michael McCoy

Michael Oliver McCoy, 77, of Newton, passed away Thursday evening, Dec. 6, 2012, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services for Michael will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery. Visitation with the family will start at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, with a lunch at noon, until service time at the funeral home. Memorials are being designated in Michael’s name, and may be left at the funeral home.

Michael, the son of Michael Oliver and Grace Dell (Brown-Stoner) McCoy, was born May 2, 1935, in Linden, Iowa. He graduated from high school and later attended college for several years.

On July 1, 1955, Michael was united in marriage with Leota Marie Stewart in Ames. He had lived in Corpus Christi, Texas, for several years, prior to Newton. He retired from the Maytag Company in 1994, after 30-plus years in the salvage department. Michael had devoted his life to his family and friends, and enjoyed stock car racing and racing motorcycles until he once met an oak tree.

Those left to honor Michael’s memory include his children: daughters Cindy (Roger) Lickey of Newton and Jody (Joseph) Karge of Des Moines; and his son Mike G. (Sherry) McCoy of Ames; his six grandchildren; a four great-grandsons; his half-brothers: Raymond Stoner and Darwin Stoner of Missouri; half-sister Rozella Yeager of Cedar Rapids; and his many friends.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Leota, on May 16, 1992; a great-granddaughter, Audrey Elizabeth Logue; his five sisters; and two brothers.
