Cardinals finish 1-1 in double dual at ADM

It was a tale of two meets for the Newton wrestling team Thursday night, as the Cardinals defeated Nevada 46-27, but also suffered a 51-6 loss to Adel-DeSoto-Minburn at a double dual in Adel.

Freshman 145-pounder Nicoli Allspach ran his record to 7-2 with two victories on the night, including Newton’s only victory against ADM. He pinned Justin Wong in 4 minutes, 56 seconds to earn all of Newton’s 6 points in the loss. Against Nevada, he scored a 10-1 major decision over Tray Pelzer.

Other wins for the Cardinals against Nevada included pins by freshman Bryce Tish (126), sophomore Jeffrey Thongvanh (160), freshman Jordan Henning (195) and junior Ray Schroeder (220), who improved his record to 6-3 on the year.

Newton sophomore Dakota Dawson moved to 7-3 on the season with a 9-3 decision at 132, while sophomore Brett Northcott improved to 4-1 with a 6-3 decision at 138. Junior Koby Hull and freshman Ronald Clark received forfeits at 106 and 285, respectively, for the Cardinals.

The 133 and 120 weight classes were open for Newton in both matchups, while 182, 220 and 285 were open against ADM only. The Cards will continue their season this weekend when they take part in a tournament at Western Dubuque.
