Nearly century-old Iowa theater goes digital

HAMPTON (AP) — A nearly century-old theater in northern Iowa is going digital.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports the Windsor Theatre in Hampton is installing a digital projector this week after it successfully raised $80,000 for the switch.

Theater manager Jim Davies says the move to digital is necessary as movie studios phase out the use of 35 mm films.

The nonprofit organization that runs the theater plans to raise an additional $40,000 to pay for improvements like a movable screen and stage curtains for live theater performances.

The theater will play its first film in the digital format on Friday.
