Lynnville-Sully girls, boys cruise to wins over HLV

Tuesday night was smooth sailing for Lynnville-Sully basketball, as the girls and boys teams each had dominant wins at home over Hardwick-Ladora-Victor. The Lady Hawks won 58-24, while the boys won 51-22.

The Hawk girls (4-1, 3-1 South Iowa Cedar League) made better than 45 percent of their field goals on 24-of-53 shooting and outrebounded the Warriors 34-13. They balanced their scoring well, as sophomores Madison Rasmusson and Lysandra James had 13 points and junior Rachel Van Wyk had 12. Rasmusson had six steals, while James had nine rebounds.

On the boys side, Lynnville-Sully improved to 2-1 (1-0) by blowout past HLV in the fourth quarter. It led 30-21 after the third before outscoring the Warriors 21-1 in the last eight minutes. Junior TJ Cunninham led the way with 13 points and senior Nathan Russell had 12.

“We struggled to find a rhythm offensively, but continued to play tough defense,” Hawks coach Nick Harthoorn said. “The guys hung in there and finished with a strong fourth quarter.”

Lynnville-Sully is back in action Friday night when the girls and boys play at Belle Plaine.
