L-S held Keota to single digits in each quarter and pulled away by outscoring it 17-9 in the fourth quarter. Junior Cassie Cullen led the team with 13 points, 11 rebounds and five steals, while sophomore Madison Rasmusson had 10 points and four steals.

Against E-B, the Hawks led 37-26 entering the fourth quarter and held on from there. Junior Rachel Van Wyk had 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Cullen had eight points and 10 rebounds. Rasmusson added nine points.

Colfax-Mingo boys snap 25-game losing streak

It was a long time coming, but the losing streak is finally over. On Saturday, the Colfax-Mingo boys basketball team tasted victory for the first time since Feb. 10, 2011 with a 64-52 win over Grandview Park Baptist. It ended a 25-game losing streak.

The final game of that streak was a 71-25 loss to Nevada Friday night.

Against GVPB, the Tigerhawks pulled off a stunning comeback. They trailed 30-17 at halftime before outscoring the Defenders 18-12 in the third quarter and then 29-10 in the fourth. Senior Vaughn Wilson went 12-of-13 at the free throw line and scored 26 points.

PCM basketball splits with Greene County Friday

The Prairie City-Monroe boys basketball team improved to 3-0 on Friday night, while the girls lost a heartbreaker in a road test at Greene County.

Senior Alex DeWitte recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Mustang boys (3-0, 2-0 Heart of Iowa Conference) over the Rams. He had plenty of company in scoring and on the boards as fellow senior Michael Neff had 13 points and seven rebounds and sophomore Dillon Bruxvoort grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds to go with seven points.

After a 21-21 tie at halftime, the Mustangs took a four-point lead into the fourth quarter, in which they shut the Rams out 12-0 to seal the victory.

The Mustang girls (1-3, 0-3) weren’t as lucky in their game, however, as they fell 46-45 in overtime. The teams were dead even at the end of the first, third and fourth quarters, but the Rams managed five points to PCM’s four in overtime to escape with the victory.

Junior Abbi Gilson had a huge game for PCM, recording 21 points for nearly half of the team’s total. Senior Kelsey Townsend pitched in eight points to go along with seven assists, junior Lexi Kain scored seven off the bench, sophomore Grace Telfer added six and senior Payge Edwards had three.

CMB basketball has tough weekend

The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter boys basketball team earned its first victory of the year on Saturday, but the Raiders’ boys and girls teams went a collective 1-3 in Friday and Saturday’s action.

The Raider boys (1-2, 0-2 Heart of Iowa Conference) defeated Colo-Nesco 55-33 for their first win on Saturday. Ten Raiders got in on the scoring, with sophomore Tommy Galloway leading the way with 13 and senior Zach Hartgers joining him in double digits with 11. Junior Zach Samson led the team with seven rebounds in the win, but sophomore Bryce Kemp, senior Aaron Haupert and sophomore Patrick Girard also chipped in five boards each.

After taking an 18-7 lead into halftime and holding Colo-NESCO scoreless in the second quarter, the Raiders managed 37 points in the second half. On Friday, they fell to Gilbert 70-57.

The Raider girls are still searching for their first win after falling to Gilbert 37-33 on Friday night and 63-28 to Colo-NESCO on Saturday. They will get their next shot at a win in Baxter against Nevada as part of a girl-boy doubleheader on Tuesday.

Tigerhawk girls drop pair of

weekend games

Like the boys team, the Colfax-Mingo girls basketball team also took on Nevada and Grandview Park Baptist this weekend. The Tigerhawks dropped both games to fall to 0-4 on the season. C-M lost 57-27 to Nevada and 64-46 to GPB.

The Tigerhawks had the lead midway through the third quarter against GPB before the injury bug and foul trouble doomed them down the stretch.

“Having a lead for a good portion of the game and losing by 18 is a tough pill to swallow,” C-M coach Brandon Smith said. “Hopefully we can learn from this experience and finish strong the next time an opportunity presents itself.”

Senior Nicolette Husson had 10 points and 10 rebounds against Nevada, and then had 20 points and 17 rebounds against GPB. Fellow senior Sydnie Fahrney had nine points against Nevada and 12 against GPB.
