Hosting the Cardinal Classic Saturday, the Newton wrestling team picked up some valuable early-season experience in its first invitational of the season.

The Cardinals hosted five other teams in a round-robin format meet, finishing the day in fifth place while its lineup was open at three weight classes.

Sioux City North won the meet with 286.02 points, followed by Knoxville (264.03) and Johnston (231.04).

All 11 Newton wrestlers had at least three matches, and seven of them had five.

Three Cardinals left the meet as champions — sophomore Dakota Dawson and juniors Ray Schroder and Jacob Williams.

Dawson went 5-0 at 132 pounds, earning three pins on the day. He won two matches by decision, with a combined score of 21-4. He was the team’s top scorer, earning 34 points for the day. He is now 6-0 on the young season.

Schroder is 5-0 on the season after going 4-0 and winning a title at 195 pounds. He had one pin and three decisions by a combined score of 32-10. He earned 28 points for the team.

Williams went 3-0 on the day and won the title at 220 pounds. He had pins in his first two matches, and then beat Sioux City North’s Tyler Drey 7-5 in overtime in what essentially was the championship match. He is 4-0 on the season.

The Cardinals had three other wrestlers place in the top three. Senior Derrick Hurt was the runner-up at 285, going 2-1. His only loss was a 7-5 decision in overtime to Indianola’s Colby Vlieger.

Sophomore Koby Hull took third place at 106, going 3-2 on the day. His wins included a pin in 19 seconds, a 17-1 technical fall and a come-from-behind 10-8 overtime decision. In the overtime win, he rallied from being down 6-2 in the third period.

Also taking third was freshman Nicoli Allspach at 145. He went 3-2 on the day, earning two pins and a 10-4 decision while scoring 24 team points.

Newton was open at 113, 120 and 182.

The Cardinals’ next meet is Thursday — a double dual in Adel vs. Adel-DeSoto-Minburn and Nevada. That meet begins at 5:30 p.m.
