PCM girls, boys cruise past Panthers
The Prairie City-Monroe girls basketball team earned its first win of the season Thursday night in dominant fashion, downing Knoxville 50-19 in non-conference action in Monroe.
The Mustangs (1-2, 1-1 Heart of Iowa Conference) led 29-6 at halftime and went on for the easy victory despite shooting just 27 percent from the field (13-for-48). They got 21 points from the free-throw line, making 21-of-33.
PCM spread the scoring around, and nine different players scored and no one was in double digits. Sophomore Grace Telfer led the team with nine points, while junior Abbi Gilson and senior Kelsey Townsend each had eight. Telfer also had 10 rebounds.
It was the same story on the boys’ side, as the Mustangs improved to 2-0 on the season with a 55-29 win over Knoxville.
PCM led 12-3 after one quarter and outscored the Panthers 26-8 in the second for a 38-11 halftime lead.
Senior Michael Neff had a game-high 15 points, while senior Alex DeWitte had 11 and junior Dillon Bruxvoort added seven.
PCM wrestlers take down
North Polk
The PCM wrestling team opened its season Thursday with a dual at North Polk, where the Mustangs came home winners by a score of 39-36.
PCM won eight of the 14 matches, with four of those wins by pin. Senior Hunter Reed (145 pounds), sophomores Dakota Timmons (170) and Ron Marshall (182) and junior Lucas Rains (195) each earned a pin. Sophomore Trystan Clark (132), junior Luke Cummings (160) and senior Blake Sidie (220) won by decision and senior Alek Breckenridge (126) received a forfeit.
Lynnville-Sully wrestling
goes 2-1 at Pella
The Lynnville-Sully wrestling team took part in its second quadrangular of the week Thursday night, facing three teams in Pella. The Hawks went 2-1 in three duals, topping English Valleys 54-23 and the host Little Dutch 42-34 and falling to Tri-County/Thornburg 42-33.
“We wrestled good tonight and made great progress from Tuesday, but still have a long way to go and are getting there,” Lynnville-Sully coach Steve Northcutt said. “It was good to see Pella in a dual with other kids that we normally won’t see again.”
Tigerhawk wrestlers fall at Ogden
Thursday night also was opening night for the Colfax-Mingo wrestling team, which lost 51-24 at Ogden.
Tigerhawks’ senior and returning state-qualifier Dylan Albright earned a pin at 182 pounds, while sophomore Jimmy Abell (106), sophomore Chris Warner (220) and junior Brandon Byal (285) received forfeits.
