Pacesetters to compete Friday at Wells Fargo Arena

The Newton Pacesetters will compete at the Iowa State Dance/Drill Team Competition on Friday at Wells Fargo Arena and Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines.

The ISDTA Dance Championships involves more than 5,000 participants representing 275 high school dance teams and color guards. Teams are judged by an expert panel of judges from across the United States. The judges’ scores are based on appearance, choreography, execution, technique and general effect/showmanship. Teams will be awarded Division I, II and III ratings along with trophy placements. Teams also are recognized for academics, community service and sportsmanship.

The Pacesetters will compete against 11 teams in each of their categories: Class IV Kick (1:54 p.m.), Class IV Jazz (2:52) and Class XII Pom (8:00).

Last year the Pacesetters received third place overall in kick and five place overall in pom. The Pacesetters will compete in jazz for the first time this year. The Pacesetters goal for this year is to receive a Division I rating in all three categories as well as place in the top five. The team believes these goals are attainable due to many hours of practice, hard work, and most importantly, teamwork. The Pacesetters are coached by Lori Gilmore and Paige Meredith.

The competition runs from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. The doors open for spectators at 7 a.m. All seats are general admission. Ticket cost is $10.
