• A 14-year-old Newton boy was charged with fifth-degree theft after an off-duty officer observed him taking a pair of tennis shoes valued at $4.98 from The Salvation Army at 1:33 p.m. Tuesday. The boy was referred to juvenile court services.

• Stacy M. Dhabalt, 37, of Knoxville was charged with driving while license suspended after authorities stopped her at 12:46 a.m. Tuesday in the 1100 block of South 13th Avenue East for not having license plate lights on her vehicle. She was charged and released to appear in court.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. It is the policy of the Newton Daily News to release the names of individuals charged with a crime who are 15 and older.
