Veterans across the nation were honored during Veterans Day celebrations on Sunday. Locally, vets are invited to yet another event tonight to keep them up-to-date on issues pertaining to them.

The Newton American Legion Post #111 is hosting a meeting at 7:15 p.m. tonight “concerning the direction of The American Legion, legislative issues facing our veterans and how your community can be involved in assisting those who are serving or have returned from deployments,” according to a letter from Lyle Schaffer, department commander of The American Legion of Iowa.

State and local officers also will be on hand to answer questions concerning benefit and claim issues.

“The American Legion also wants to recognize American Legion Post #111 and community of Newton for their efforts in recognizing veterans from our wars past, not only through honor services for our deceased comrades but also through the organizing of the Freedom Flights and Honor Flights, in which Jasper County played a huge role in organizing,” a news release stated.

All local military veterans and concerned citizens are invited to attend tonight’s meeting to hear Schaffer and National Vice Commander Glenn A. Hickman speak at the first stop of a five-day tour of communities in western and central Iowa.
