Cyclone women top Lady Statesmen in exhibition

AMES (ISU) — The Iowa State women’s basketball team defeated the William Penn Lady Statesmen, 98-55 in the Cyclones’ second exhibition game of the season on Tuesday night in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones were lead offensively by sophomore Fallon Ellis who came off the bench to post a 20-point, 12-rebound double-double on a perfect 7-7 shooting night.

The Cyclones looked sharp early, getting off to a fast start and led 16-4 less than five minutes into the game. Senior Chelsea Poppens fueled the Cyclones early, hitting her first three shots from the field. The forward ended the night with 12 points and eight boards in just 14 minutes of work.

The Lady Statesmen fought their way back into the game later in the first half, narrowing the Iowa State lead to one point at 33-32 with 4:16 to play in the half. A late surge by the Cyclones, capped by a Brynn Williamson trey with 10 seconds left in the half, gave Iowa State a 42-34 cushion heading into the locker room.
