The Capitol II Theater in Newton is undergoing minor renovations this week in preparation for its Friday reopening.
Since its closure on Sept. 12, the theater’s ownership has changed hands from former parent company Big Time Cinema to local couple Dawn and Paul Bleeker. Now that it’s locally owned and the Bleekers have total control over all the decisions, changes are in works to revamp the movie theater.
All throughout the weekend and last several days, the Bleekers have been busy putting a fresh coat of paint in the lobby, and local business are set to professionally clean the carpets and seats before the first movies — “Here Comes the Boom” and “Looper” — begin showings at 7:10 and 7 p.m. on Friday, respectively.
“‘Skyfall’ didn’t happen for us, not yet,” Dawn said of the planned weekend lineup, noting she hopes to get the next James Bond installment in the coming weeks.
As for “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2,” fans will be treated to not one, but two early showings on Thursday, Nov. 15. The first is set for 10 p.m. and the second will be at 12:15 a.m. Friday morning. The theater will pre-sell tickets, but patrons “just need to be patient with us,” Dawn said.
Other recent changes include a new phone number and website. Capitol II staff now may be contacted at (641) 792-FLIX and moviegoers can view upcoming showings at www.capitol2.com.
During Friday’s opening night showings, the Medicap Pharmacy will donate a free bag of popcorn.
