Santa to attend Downtown Christmas Open House

Kris Kringle himself has decided interrupt his holiday preparations to make an early journey to Newton this weekend for the Downtown Christmas Open House, sponsored by the Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce.

Downtown Christmas Open House Highlights are as follows:

• 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday — All downtown merchants will be open and decorated for the season, with many featuring holiday goodies and special sales.

• 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday — Santa will be on the downtown square strolling and stopping at various locations.

• Noon to 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday — Free horse-drawn carriage rides courtesy of Park Centre and Newton Village plus the Iowa Speedway Pace Car will give kids rides around the square.

Santa also indicated he would be back in Newton on Nov. 23 for the Jasper County Courthouse Lighting Ceremony and Lighted Christmas Parade, which this year is themed “Christmas on the Silver Screen!”

Food and festivities will begin at 5 p.m. on the square, with the courthouse lighting and parade at 6 p.m.
