Hawkeyes down Quincy, 100-54, in preseason

IOWA CITY (U of I) — Aaron White says the University of Iowa men’s basketball team is at its best in transition.

If that’s the case, 12,251 fans inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena saw the Hawkeyes at their best quite a bit Sunday during a 100-54 exhibition victory against Quincy University.

Iowa scored the game’s first 22 points and notched 41 points off 31 turnovers.

“(The press) worked well for us,” said White, who scored nine points with three blocked shots. “We were trying to cause havoc on them; it’s good for us to cause turnovers. That’s when we’re best offensively, when we’re in transition and scoring off turnovers.”

UI freshman point guard Mike Gesell led all players with 18 points; he made 3-of-5 3-point goals and added three assists and two steals.

Gesell was joined in double figures by Hawkeye senior Eric May and sophomore Josh Oglesby with 15 points, and junior Melsahn Basabewith 10.

The Hawkeyes shot 54.1 percent from the field in the second half to finish 33-of-69 for the game (47.8). They received 56 points off the bench.

Iowa launched 25 3-point field goals, making 11 — three each by Gesell and Ogelsby, two by May, and one each by White and Anthony Clemmons.

UI junior Roy Devyn Marble saw 20 minutes of playing time, tops among the 15 Hawkeyes. McCaffery wanted to get more time for 7-foot-1 freshman center Adam Woodbury, who pulled down six rebounds and scored four points in 11 minutes.

Iowa led 48-19 at halftime. The Hawkeyes limited Quincy to 25.9-percent shooting from the field (7-of-27) during the first 20 minutes.

Iowa returns to action Friday, Nov. 9, against UT-Pan American beginning at 8 p.m. inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
