NHS athletic department, Newton Y teaming up for new basketball program

The Newton Senior High School athletic department, NHS boys and girls basketball coaching staff and the Newton YMCA Sports Academy are putting together comprehensive and competitive basketball programs for boys and girls. The groups will be conducting tryouts on Thursday, Nov. 1.

Tryouts will be at the NHS gymnasium. Boys and girls in fourth and fifth grades will try out from 5:30-7 p.m. Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades will try out from 7-8:30. All are welcome to try out.

During tryouts, parents will fill out contact information, register their child and learn more about the program during a parents meeting.

Each team will consist of eight to 10 students. Teams for boys and for girls will be established by grades (fourth graders will play on a fourth grade team, etc.). Once players are placed on teams, parents will be contacted with team practice times and locations, which will be scheduled by the Y and NHS athletic department.

Those interested in coaching also will have an opportunity to fill out paperwork. Coaches will be selected by the above staff. For those coaching, a coaches clinic will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, at Newton Y. The clinic is led by the NHS basketball coaching staff.
