June Gawthorp

June Gawthorp, 92, of Newton, the daughter of Francis and Inez (Bennett) Auston, was born June 6, 1920, in Lansing, Michigan. She graduated from North High School in Lansing.

June, a devoted mother and grandmother, made a decision to move from Lansing when her son was 9 years old, allowing him to be raised in Iowa, to be in a safer environment and to have a better quality of life for all. She was a kind and warm-hearted lady and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.

A longtime resident of the Newton area, she was employed as a secretary for the Vernon Company for 24 years. She enjoyed sharing her craft of quilt making with friends, toy ministries in Pella and local residents. She was known as the Tie Lady, making her beautiful quilts from men’s old ties. She was a loyal and faithful member of the Newton Church of the Nazarene, and enjoyed sharing her faith with others.
