It was a bizarre and bittersweet Senior Night for the Newton Football team Friday night.

Playing in what could be their final home game, the Cardinals routed winless Saydel 35-0 in the first half at H.A. Lynn Field before lightning caused the game to be eventually called before it even got to halftime.

It will go down as a 35-0 win for the Cardinals, making it three straight wins since a lopsided loss at Grinnell. Newton is now 4-4 on the season, and 3-2 in Class 3A District 4.

The Cards scored on three touchdown passes from sophomore Tyler Wood, and runs by sophomore Tristan Peters and senior Jesse Bates.

Senior Collin Reynolds grabbed an interception on Saydel's first possession at its 22-yard line, and three plays later, he caught a 15-yard TD pass to make it 7-0 Newton just 91 seconds into the game.

On the Cards' next possession, Wood threw a slant pass to sophomore Deonne Harris, who caught it at the Eagles' 10 and cut upfield for a 21-yard score.

A few possessions later, junior Will Brock recovered a Saydel fumble at its 1, and Peters went up the middle to score on the next play to make it 21-0 with 2:20 left in the first quarter.

Junior Ryan Thompson blocked a punt on Saydel's ensuing possession, setting up Newton with a first down on the Eagles' 13. One play later, Bates took a carry off left tackle and into the endzone to make it 28-0.

Early in the second quarter on a third-and-four on Saydel's 46, Reynolds caught a quick pass in the flat, slipped two tackles and zoomed up the Cardinal sideline for a touchdown and the final tally of the night.

Officials cleared the stadium with 3:03 left in the half, and 20 minutes later, both coaches agreed to end the game.
