• Aleta M. Alberts, 40, of State Center was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (second offense) after authorities stopped her at 8:34 p.m. Oct. 3 in the 3500 block of Highway 14 North for swerving in the lane and having an inoperable license plate light. Alberts had slurred speech and bloodshot, watery eyes, and she failed sobriety maneuvers. A Datamaster test indicated a blood alcohol content of .207. She was found to have been convicted of OWI previously on March 11, 2011. Authorities transported her to the Jasper County Jail.
• Larry Y. Bregar, 25, of Newton was charged with simple domestic assault after authorities responded to an assault complaint at 12:03 a.m. Saturday at in the 500 block of East Fourth Street North. Police found no visible injuries, but Bregar was charged for allegedly pushing a 21-year-old female victim around. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
• Dwain E. Harvey, 56, of Des Moines was cited with failure to maintain control after traveling on Interstate 80 at 4:54 a.m. Friday, losing control of his semi-truck near the 166 mile marker after attempting to pass another driver and traveling off the roadway, where the semi overturned and took out nine cable posts. No one was injured, and the damage to the semi, owned by the Loffredo Fresh Produce Company, was estimated at $60,000.
• Eric S. Huff, 38, and Kelli M. Kraus, 34, both of Newton, each were charged Tuesday with possession of drug paraphernalia after Newton police assisted the Iowa Department of Human Services with an investigation at 8:35 p.m. Aug. 21 at their residence at 1453 N. 11th Ave. E. #1F. After receiving consent to search the home, authorities found a clear glass pipe used to smoke methamphetamine under the bed and charged Huff and Kraus with possession of drug paraphernalia. Kraus also was charged with possession of a prescription drug without a prescription after authorities located a prescription bottle for trazodone, and Huff also was charged with possession of a controlled substance after police found a Xanax pill. Kraus was arrested at her home on Tuesday, and Huff was located at his workplace. They were taken to the Jasper County Jail.
• Timothy J. Kessler, 33, of Newton was charged with public intoxication after authorities responded to a complaint at 11:29 p.m. Friday of an intoxicated person at 1782 W. Fourth St. N. #1. Kessler was located a short distance away, smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot, watery eyes. A Datamaster test indicated a blood alcohol content of .092. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
• Lonnie F. Martin, 56, of Newton was charged with public urination after authorities responded to a complaint at 8:59 p.m. Thursday at Hy-Vee in Newton. Witnesses gave authorities the suspect’s license plate number, and Martin was located in the 800 block of First Avenue West and charged for allegedly urinating in public. He was released to appear in court.
• Gregory A. Mitchell, 18, of Newton was charged with serious domestic assault after authorities responded to a complaint of an altercation at 3:11 p.m. Sunday at 715 First St. S. in Newton. Mitchell was charged for allegedly punching a male victim in the face and was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
• Justin M. Mowery, 23, of Newton was charged with driving while license suspended after authorities stopped him at 1:06 a.m. Saturday in the 1100 block of North Third Avenue East. He was released to appear in court at a later date.
• Michael P. Sanderson, 35, of Knoxville was charged with driving while license barred after authorities stopped him at 3:02 a.m. Friday in the 100 block of East Fourth Street North for having an inoperable license plate light. He also was cited for improper use of registration, issued a warning for the light and was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
• Terrell S. Sissoko’Bakary, 18, of Des Moines was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear in court for sentencing. He was picked up by Des Moines police and transferred into the custody of Newton authorities at 9:19 p.m. Friday. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
• Kirkland Tompkins Jr., 32, of Des Moines was charged with fourth-degree theft after authorities responded to a shoplifting report at 3:55 a.m. Oct. 2 at Walmart. According to a police report, video surveillance showed several subjects leave the store with a cart containing a baby stroller and other items, which totaled $285.76 in value. Witnesses told police the suspects left the parking lot heading toward Interstate 80. Following an investigation, Tompkins was located and taken to the Jasper County Jail. The incident remains under investigation.
• Richard L. Vanderputte, 34, of Newton was charged with second-degree burglary after authorities responded to a complaint at 11:08 p.m. Friday at 1209 W. 16th St. S. #207. The victim told police Vanderputte entered his apartment without permission, took several swings at him and kicked him several times in leg. Vanderputte smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech but refused sobriety testing. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
• Three Newton teenagers were charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia after authorities received a report of a suspicious vehicle at 2:33 a.m. Sept. 22 and located the vehicle in the 800 block of First Street North. Officers found a baggie of marijuana and two marijuana pipes inside the vehicle and charged 16-year-old Tyler S. Harsha and 15-year-olds Kolton B. Hansen and Jacob C. Seaman with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Seaman also was cited with curfew violation, and Harsha and Hansen were given curfew warnings. All three were released to appear in juvenile court.

• Amanda L. Bruce, 26, of Kellogg was charged with driving while license suspended after authorities stopped her at 12:18 p.m. Monday in the 8000 block of Highway 6 East. She was released to appear in court at a later date.
• Michael J. Conlin, 26, of Ottumwa was arrested at 9 a.m. Sunday after being released from the Newton Correction Facility for failure to appear for sentencing in Wapello County. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail to await transfer to Wapello County authorities.
• Travis E. Thompson, 38, of Marshalltown and Roni Jo Hobbs, 33, of Grinnell both were charged with interference with official acts and arrested on probation violation warrants after authorities responded to investigate a one-vehicle accident at 9:27 p.m. Saturday at East 136th Avenue North and North 39th Avenue East. Both Thompson and Hobbs, who were passengers in the vehicle, allegedly gave false information concerning their identities to authorities. Thompson also was wanted on a contempt of court charge. They were arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail. No charges were issued in connection with the accident.
• Brian S. Williams, 26, of Newton was arrested on a warrant for sex offender registration violation after he turned himself in at 7:45 a.m. Monday at the Jasper County Jail. He was placed in jail.
A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. It is the policy of the Newton Daily News to release the names of individuals charged with a crime who are 15 and older.
