Three Davenport schools evacuated due to gas smell

DAVENPORT (AP) — Classes have resumed at three Davenport schools after a brief evacuation because of a natural gas smell.

The Quad City-Times reported 1,700 students and staff were evacuated for about 20 minutes Monday morning at North High School, Harrison Elementary School and Kimberly Center.

District spokeswoman Dawn Saul says the district received calls about a strong odor from eight schools about 10 a.m., saying the area affected was widespread.

She says principals at each school made the decision to evacuate depending on whether the smell was stronger inside or outside. Saul says everyone is fine.

This is the second time Davenport schools have been evacuated because of a natural gas smell. Last month, three schools were evacuated. MidAmerican Energy said cause was undetermined.
