Search for suspects in Iowa swan shooting continues

MASON CITY (AP) — The search continues for suspects in the shooting of a trumpeter swan at a nature center in northern Iowa.

The Globe Gazette in Mason City says the swan was killed on Saturday at the Lime Creek Nature Center in Cerro Gordo County.

Ben Bergman of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the agency was alerted by a caller. One swan was killed and another may have been wounded as they flew over a quarry.

Trumpeter swans are a protected non-game species in Iowa. They are the largest native bird in North American, and were nearly wiped out by hunters in the late 1800s.
