Hawks look to keep rolling vs. North Mahaska

The Lynnville-Sully football team may have gotten off to a rocky start this season, but the Hawks have been running full-steam ahead lately.

After a 1-2 start, the Hawks (4-2, 3-1 Class A District 6) have outscored their past three opponents by a combined 144-7, including blowout wins of 61-0 and 70-0 over winless Southeast Warren and Pleasantville the last two weeks.

That gives Lynnville-Sully a ton of momentum heading into tonight's home matchup vs. North Mahaska (1-6, 1-3). With a win, the Hawks would essentially clinch a playoff berth and keep its district title hopes alive. Their only losses this season were a 40-19 non-district game against 1A No. 11 Pella Christian and a 34-27 loss to No. 5 Pekin (6-0, 5-0). They've dominated ever since.

In Lynnville-Sully's last three games, junior running back Bailee Samson has rushed a total of 39 times for 455 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 11.7 yards per carry. He has 691 yards on the season, good for second in the district.

Tigerhawks shooting for third win of season

It's safe to say the last four games haven't been much fun for Colfax-Mingo. The Tigerhawks (2-5, 0-4 Class 1A District 7) were dominated in all four by a combined score of 144-51. Their latest drubbing was a 62-21 loss at Central Decatur.

But things are looking up tonight, as Colfax-Mingo will have a great opportunity to pick up its third win of the season. It plays in Urbandale tonight against Des Moines Christian, a team that has struggled mightily. The Lions (1-5, 0-3) have lost their last five games, and scored nine points or fewer in four of them.

Though the Tigerhawks are out of playoff contention, getting a win tonight would be a big confidence boost before they end the season by hosting No. 11 Pella Christian next week.

Colfax-Mingo has the district's top two leading tacklers so far. Freshman Jake Lietz is No.1 with 92 total stops, including 46 solo. Senior Dylan Albright is second with 85 total, including 35 solo.

Raiders looking to upset Albia

Collins-Maxwell-Baxter may be 2-5 this season, but that record hardly tells the whole story of its season so far. Three of those losses have been by seven points or less, which means the Raiders have been a few plays away from having a winning season.

On the bright side, CMB (2-5, 1-2 Class 2A District 6) is coming off a 42-23 win over Insterstate 35 last week, in which junior Zach Huffaker had a huge rushing day with 18 carries for 222 yards and five touchdowns.

If the Raiders want to have any chance of making the postseason, they'll likely have to upset No. 14 Albia (5-1, 3-1) in Baxter tonight. The Blue Demons haven't exactly been dominant in their past three games, beating Davis County 17-7, falling 39-29 to Bondurant-Farrar and defeating Prairie-City Monroe 35-28.

CMB junior quarterback Zach Samson's statistics are still right near the top of the district. He's second in passing yardage with 1,168, having thrown 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He's also second in rushing yards (799) and TDs (nine).
