Newton Village kicks off capital campaign for new skilled care unit

Jasper County has a higher percentage of residents over age 65 than the statewide average. With that in mind, Elim Care, the parent company of Newton Village, has given permission for the facility to embark on a major new addition.
Currently, Newton Village has 50 independent apartments, 35 assisted living apartments and nine memory care apartments, home to more than 100 older adults. However, skilled care has been one level of service missing from Newton Village. Often, a time of recuperation or therapy is needed by the residents. Now, with the new addition, that recuperation can take place in an environment the residents already call home.
Gary Shebeck, Newton Village administrator, said the new, 20,000 square foot wing will add 24 skilled beds, 20 private beds, in a state-of-the-art facility, featuring a shower in each room, a data center and Wi-Fi. A physical therapy department and a spa will be included, as well as an activity center/chapel. A double-sided fireplace in the dining room will enhance the vaulted ceilings, and a patio off the east side of the dining area will add a warm and inviting atmosphere.
"Elim Care has been in business since 1927, and they know how to do things the right way," Shebeck said.
Shebeck added that the project will add between 25 and 30 new jobs, including nurses, care attendants, and CNAs.
In addition to the new wing, Newton Village is also adding on to its independent living area with an activity room and a chapel.
With the new skilled care unit, tenants of Newton Village who may need a time of recuperation or therapy, will no longer need to leave the campus to receive skilled care. Needed rest and rehabilitation will take place in an environment the residents consider home. Family and friends will be able to visit easily, encouraging the healing presence of loved ones.
Construction for the new wing is scheduled to begin in spring 2013. The estimated cost is approximately $3 million. A $300,000 capital campaign is focused on building and furnishing the chapel and other common areas of the new building. Shebeck said he is requesting financial partnerships with businesses and residents to make a positive impact on the lives that Newton Village will serve for generations to come.
Gifts don't need to be in cash, Shebeck said. Gifts of land, stocks or even grain revenues can be donated to Newton Village, and the grain would not be considered taxable income. All gifts of $1,000 or more will be permanently recognized on the donor Caring Tree.
