• Thomas J. Odem, 32, of Newton was charged with serious domestic assault after officers were called to 210 E. 28th St. N. #201 in reference to an assault in progress. Odem allegedly bit the victim’s arm and kicked her in the stomach. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Jennifer A. Shaver, 41, of Kellogg, was charged with public intoxication Sept. 22 at 1:51 a.m. when she was observed stumbling in the 100 block of First Avenue East, Shaver refused sobriety maneuvers and was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Sharon K. Woods, 42, of Newton was charged with driving with a suspended license at 7:44 p.m. Saturday when she was observed failing to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of South Eighth Avenue East and East 12th Street South. She was released to appear.

Prairie City Police Department and Jasper County Sheriff’s Office

• On Aug. 31, the Prairie City Police Department, Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol conducted a joint traffic safety project in the Prairie City area to promote traffic safety during the Labor Day Weekend.

During the project law enforcement officers issued six citations for speeding, two citations for no seatbelt, one citation for failure to secure child, one citation for failure to obey stop sign and two citations for no insurance. Officers issued 30 warnings for speeding, four warnings for window tint, three warnings for registration violations, two warnings for insurance card, two warnings for seatbelt and six warnings for equipment violations.

Primary funding for this project was provided by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau. 

• On Aug. 18, the Prairie City Police Department and Jasper County Sheriff’s Office conducted a joint traffic safety project in the Prairie City area to promote traffic safety during the Iowa State Fair.

During the project law enforcement officers issued one citation for no insurance. Officers also contacted four individuals for possession of alcohol under age. Officers issued two warnings for speeding and nine warnings for other traffic violations.

Primary funding for this project was provided by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. It is the policy of the Newton Daily News to release the names of individuals charged with a crime who are 15 and older.
