Reading about other countries, cultures can be very valuable

Learning about other cultures can be a family affair. We had three children and wanted another, so we added another joy to our family by adopting a Native American child, one who belonged to the Sioux Tribe.

We have some Native American Heritage. I belong to the Citizen Nation Potawatomi Tribe and my husband has ancestry in the Osage Tribe. Due to our mixed heritage our family has enjoyed numerous cultural insights.

You don’t need to adopt a child to learn from other cultures. You do need an open mind and you do need to be literate. Part of literacy is what we do with what we learn through reading and writing. Reading about our differences helps us realize that we are all people and all appreciate our heritage.
