AMES (ISU) — Cyclones Alison Landwehr and Jamie Straube are two of 30 volleyball candidates for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award, it was announced Thursday. The Iowa State standouts are the only candidates from the Big 12 Conference.

A native of St. Louis, Mo., Landwehr has led Iowa State’s 5-1 offense since 2010, collecting 3,007 assists in two-plus seasons as the Cyclones’ starting setter, one of only three Cyclones to ever reach the 3,000 assists mark. In 2011, Landwehr earned AVCA All-America First Team honors for her work on the court as well as an Academic All-Big 12 First Team nod. Landwehr has been busy away from the classroom and court as well, involved in community service projects including Kids’ Clinic, Dr. Seuss Day at Gilbert Elementary, Carnival at Fellows Elementary, flood recovery and children’s hospital visits.

“[Alison] is the ideal teammate,” head Iowa State coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. “She’s very respectful, encouraging, positive and works extremely hard. She has put in so many extra hours of setter training to get to where she is now as a player.”

A solid competitor from day one, Straube was unanimously chosen to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team in 2009 and has since racked up two AVCA All-America Honorable Mention awards, among numerous conference honors. One of the Cyclones’ academic stars as well, Straube is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection and was a 2010 ESPN Academic All-District VII First Team member. Another of Iowa State’s community volunteers, Straube has spent time working with the Dance Marathon fashion show, helping with flood recovery, volunteering at One Heart Equestrian Therapy and On With Life Brain/Spinal Cord Injury Rehab Clinic.

“When Jamie gets hot, she can take over a match,” Landwehr said of her fellow senior. “Even if she is hurting, Jamie finds a way to give a drill, a point, or an important match everything she has.”

To be eligible for the Senior CLASS Award, a student-athlete must be classified as a senior and have notable achievements in the areas of community, classroom, character and competition.

The list of 30 candidates for the volleyball award will be pared down to 10 finalists by a national media committee later this month.
