Cards earn victory at Westwood with season-best 301

On Thursday, Newton boys golf coach Pat Riley got to do something he has been waiting to do since he took the position a few years ago — announce his team as the winner of a tournament.

The Cardinals may have found themselves a lucky number, as seniors Austin Shores and James Leonard and sophomore Devin Shores all carded 75s, while senior Tyler McAnally was right behind with a 76, to finish with a season-best 301 to defeat five other teams in their lone home invitational of the season at Westwood Municipal Golf Course.

“I’m just so happy for those kids, I know they worked really hard this summer,” Riley said. “I knew they had this capability in them, and I knew they could play like this. Their swings are all great and they put it all together today.”
