First Christian Church VBS, congregation raise $1,000 for Haiti ovens

Sonrise National Park was the theme for this year's vacation Bible school held Aug. 5-9 at First Christian Church in Newton.

Children were challenged each evening to bring an offering to purchase solar ovens to be sent to Haiti. The ovens are used to kill disease-causing organisms in their water and milk, and to bake bread.

Water-borne diseases are responsible for 80 percent of all illness and deaths in developing nations. Combined, the children and congregation of First Christian Church were able to raise more than $1,000, which provided funds to purchase eight solar ovens.
