Cardinals take fourth in second tourney

Newton golf coach Pat Riley thought that the team’s season opener in Indianola last week would be its highest score of the season, and so far he’s right.

Back with a full roster, the Cardinals shaved 18 strokes off of their score last week to finish with a 320 and take fourth out of seven teams at an invitational at High Park Golf Course in Mason City on Monday. Marshalltown took third with a 317, host Mason City was second at 310 and Waterloo West took top billing with a 298.

“It was a much better day for us,” Riley said. “This is what I foresee us shooting. We just had a bad day last week, so now hopefully this score will be our high end for the rest of the season.”
